MOD21's first zero-emission school building inaugurated in Münster

The city of Münster has successfully commissioned the extension to the Wolbeck-Nord primary school. The school construction project was carried out by MOD21 on behalf of the municipal property management department based on plans drawn up by the engineering firm Ripperda. In just a few months of construction, a two-storey school building in modular timber construction was erected on Grenkuhlenweg, offering space for 120 pupils. The project was officially inaugurated on 22 September 2025.

Sustainable construction and maximum energy efficiency
A special feature of the new building is that it is MOD21's first zero-emission building. Thanks to the modular timber construction, CO₂ emissions were reduced by 98 per cent compared to conventional construction methods – from around 297,000 kg CO₂ to just 5,600 kg CO₂. The school achieves a high standard of thermal insulation in combination with a heat pump and photovoltaic system. The climate-friendly construction is complemented by a modern ventilation system with heat recovery. MOD21's timber modules are manufactured exclusively from FSC or PEFC certified timber. The project has been awarded the Blue Certificate (DGNB).

Flexible learning spaces on two floors
A total of 44 modules make up the 1,246 square metre extension. The room layout includes four classrooms, three supervision rooms, two differentiation rooms, a multi-purpose room, two team work rooms and two teachers' offices. There are also play areas, a childcare studio and modern ancillary rooms that can be used for a variety of purposes.

Completion in record time
The modules were manufactured at the factory within a few weeks and assembled on site in just eight days. This was followed by finishing work, and the landscaping is currently still in progress. The construction period from foundation to completion took a total of five months.

Łukasz Świątkowski, CEO of MOD21, emphasises: ‘With the new building in Wolbeck, we are demonstrating how modern school premises can be realised in the shortest possible time and in a climate-friendly manner. This project is an important milestone for MOD21 and for the educational landscape in Münster.’

With the completion of the Wolbeck-Nord primary school, MOD21 has successfully implemented another construction project. The company name says it all: since entering the market in 2023, the company has already taken on 21 projects – a strong signal of dynamism and innovative strength.

‘With this new modular building, we as a city are sending a clear signal for sustainable construction in the education sector, combined with a short construction period,’ explains Arno Minas, Head of Real Estate for the City of Münster. ‘The modern primary school offers energy-efficient, future-oriented learning spaces, creating the best conditions for future generations of pupils.’
